Sephie had been given a 4 page vocabulary sheet last week, but as is typical with most 3rd graders she only "practiced" for an hour. So I didn't have expectations of her getting beyond the first couple of rounds and the word "pirate" in the practice round showed her nervousness when she forgot the 'r.' (or is it "arrrrr?")
Next thing I know the kids have gone through 5 or 6 rounds and there's Sephie standing with a 5th grader Rosie.
That's when the rules shift for the one on one format. I lost track of the words and after what seemed like forever, it was over. Rosie had won and Sephie was 1st runner-up. So if Rosie can't make the Bee in February, Sephie will have to step up and represent Lowell Elementary School.
Fools best recognize.
Wow. What a kid I have. I may have been smart enough to win a bee, but I was never brave enough to enter. She was confident even after misspelling words and bounced right back to get other words correct.
It was like her first MTB race this spring. All I could do was watch and be proud, and I couldn't be prouder.
Tonight we'll go out to dinner to celebrate. I suspect we'll be doing sushi but she'll be the one to make the call.

Her uncles entered the Dodgeville Middle School Spelling Bee when they were in 7th & 8th grade. We ended up having to finish the competition in another room, because it got down to him & me, and we went back & forth for a good 30-45 minutes. Until finally I prevailed. It really didn't matter which one of us won because our middle school was sending two representatives to the District Bee. And as it turns out, TAFKAA (The Artist Formerly Known As Andrew) was going to be in NYC for Model UN, so the 3rd place finisher went.
I think it was because of the audience, but I got nervous at the District Bee & misspelled the first word I was given.
People say that one always remembers the word that they misspelled when being knocked out of a spelling bee. Not me. I have no idea what it was, other than the fact that it either had a double consonant in the middle and I didn't double it, or it had a single consonant in the middle and I doubled it.
Here's hoping she fares better than I did in the next round.
